The monthly birthday party at the North Shore Care Center will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 8 to honor Irma Larsen and Bud Hennessey. Cake and ice cream will be served at 3 p.m. with piano music and a sing-a-long by Sherrie Lindskog and Nora Bockovich.

Despite sub-zero temperatures, the Gichigami Express Sled Dog Race continues today, Sunday, January 5 at Grand Portage Lodge & Casino. Mushers are nearing Devil Track Lake on their way to The Landing at Devil Track for the end of the second stage of the race. Eleven teams left Poplar Lake at 9 a.m. this morning in - 25 degree temperatures. Mushers are competing for a guaranteed $25,000 race purse.
The first stage of the race was 60 miles through the wilderness from Grand Portage to Hungry Jack Lodge on the Gunflint Trail. Racing fans and handlers are anxiously standing by at The Landing at Devil Track to see dogs and mushers come across the lake.
This evening a banquet will be hosted by the American Legion Post 413 downtown Grand Marais at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
There has been some exciting action at the Cook County Curling Club in the first half of the curling season. The Pete Gresczyk rink concluded an undefeated first half season with an 8-5 victory over the Brian Smith rink in the first half playdowns.
Gresczyk made an awesome triple split that gave him a 3-point lead in the seventh end. Local curler Ron Gervais Sr. said in his 40-plus years of curling this is only the second time he has witnessed such a shot.
Gresczyk, with Vice Ron Gervais Sr. skipping (calling the strategy), second Carline Gresczyk and alternate leads Greg Gresczyk or Marshall Pedersen completed an undefeated regular season with a 6-0 record. On the way they defeated the Andrew Smith and Rory Smith rinks prior to defeating Brian Smith (Skip) Bruce (Baggers) Johnson (Third) Mike Littfin (Second) and Mark Homerding (Lead) in the finals.
The Gresczyk rink will play for the 2013-2014 club Open League Championship in March against the winner of the second half schedule with begins play on January 6, 2014.
The club also has two Bonspiels in 2014, a Mixed Bonspiel February 21 - 23 and the Charles J. Futterer Memorial Open to be played March 7 -9. Spectators are always welcome to come watch the curlers and see what its all about.

The Gichigami Express is a three-day stage race. The first stage is 60 miles through the wilderness from Grand Portage to Hungry Jack Lodge on the Gunflint Trail. This evening there will be a banquet at Gunflint Lodge with stories of the history of mushing on the Gunflint Trail.
The second stage will start Sunday morning at 9 a.m. at Trail Center Lodge where a hearty breakfast will be available to everyone. Teams will travel approximately 60 miles following a trail that will end at The Landing at Devil Track. Teams are expected in around 1 p.m. That evening a banquet will be hosted by the American Legion Post 413 downtown Grand Marais at 6 p.m.. Everyone is welcome.
With high temperatures across Minnesota expected to be in the double digits below zero on Monday, Gov. Mark Dayton took the unusual step of cancelling schools statewide.
High temperatures in Cook County on Sunday are predicted to be 20 below zero with lows at 35 below. Monday’s highs are forecast at 13 below zero with lows at 24 below.
ISD 166 confirms Monday’s school cancellation, along with all extra curricular activities. This includes Night of the Notorious, which will be rescheduled.
The Cook County Vikings basketball games scheduled for today at Esko have been cancelled. Both ISD 166 and Great Expectations will have early dismissal today as well at 1:45 p.m.
