General Information and Terminology

Eudora has both mailboxes and mail folders. Mailboxes are used to store email messages and mail folders are used to store mailboxes. You can put related mailboxes together in the same mail folder to organize them.

For example, say you want to keep each family member's email separate. You could set up two mail folders: Parents and Children. The Parents mail folder could contain a Mom mailbox and a Dad mailbox. The Children mail folder could contain one mailbox for each child. If Mom wants to find her mail, she'd go to the Parents mail folder and open the Mom mailbox within that folder.

How do I display my mailboxes and mail folders?

You can display a list of all your mail folders and mailboxes by clicking on the Tools menu, then clicking Mailboxes. The mailbox panel window will open listing all your mailboxes under their respective mail folders. Mailboxes at the top level (not in a mail folder) will show at the top of the mailbox panel window.

How do I create a new mail folder?

Make sure your mailboxes and folders are displayed in the mailbox panel window (see this topic). Then:

  • If you want to create the mail folder at the top level (not within another folder), right-click on "Eudora" in the mailbox panel window, otherwise right-click on the name of the mail folder in which you want to create the new folder. Click "New" on the menu that comes up.
  • The New mailbox dialog will appear. Type the name of the new mail folder in the "Name the New Mailbox" field. Click on "Make it a folder" to check it. Click OK.
  • The New mailbox dialog will appear again. This is so you create at least one mailbox within the mail folder. In the "Name the New Mailbox" field, type the name of a mailbox you want kept in this folder. Click OK.
  • Your new mail folder will appear in the mailbox panel window with the new mailbox name below it.

How do I create a new mailbox?

Make sure your mailboxes and folders are displayed in the mailbox panel window (see this topic). Then:

  • If you want to create the mailbox at the top level right-click Eudora in the mailbox panel window, otherwise, right-click on the name of the mail folder in which you want to create the new mailbox. Click "New" on the menu that comes up.
  • The New mailbox dialog will appear. In the "Name the New Mailbox" field, type the name of your new mailbox. Click OK.
  • Your new mailbox will now appear in the mailbox panel window under the appropriate mail folder (if any).

How do I switch to a mailbox to view its contents?

Just double-click on its name in the mailbox panel window. The mailbox will open and a list of all the messages stored in that mailbox will be displayed.

How do I move messages into a mailbox?

First display the mailbox where the message is now by double-clicking its name in the mailbox panel window. A list of all messages in the mailbox will appear on the right side of your screen. Click on the message line for the message you want to move and drag it to the appropriate mailbox. The message will be moved to that mailbox.

By default, all messages you receive go into your In mailbox. You can change this so they are automatically routed to different mailboxes as they come in. To do this, set up an email filter - go here to see how.

How do I delete a mailbox or mail folder?

Make sure your mailboxes and folders are displayed in the mailbox panel window (see this topic). Then right-click on the name of the mailbox or folder you want to delete. Click "Delete" on the menu that appears. You may receive a warning message - click on "Remove It" to go ahead with the deletion. The mailbox will disappear from the display (and from your computer).
