Exciting news for Grand Marais! Our community has been awarded funding as part of a nearly $3 million Great Lakes initiative to enhance coastal resilience and protect our beautiful shoreline. This funding will support the Harbor, which focuses on stabilizing the shoreline and improving public access to the lakefront along the east side of the Harbor, including Boulder Park. Our city was awarded $120,000 for preliminary design work with coastal engineers. The grant begins in January 2025 and runs for 2 years as it works with the seven awarded cities’ projects.
This opportunity was made possible by the city’s partnership with the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative. This organization works with cities along the Great Lakes to help them advance the protection and restoration of the Great Lakes ecosystem.
These efforts will protect vital infrastructure, reduce future risks and costs, improve public safety, and promote local economic development by enhancing tourism and recreation opportunities. Grand Marais is committed to preserving its iconic natural beauty and ensuring a resilient, thriving future for our community.
