Tree Planting & Resilient Forests Workshops to be offered in May

The University of MN Extension and the Cook County Soil and Water Conservation District are partnering to present two workshops in May for landowners interested in tree planting and increasing resiliency in their forests.
The first workshop will focus on Hands-on Stewardship for the North Shore and will be held on Tuesday May 6th from 1-4 pm at the Grand Marais Rec Park recreation hall. The workshop is free but pre-registration is requested. Register online at z.umn.edu/forestworkshop.
Attendees will learn practical strategies for managing their North Shore woodlands. Topics will include: management of areas with dense brush, moving from aspen dominated stands to a more diverse forest, responding to spruce budworm impacts and considerations for climate resilient tree planting. This workshop will focus on actions landowners can start taking on their own to manage and improve the health of their woodlands. We’ll spend a majority of the afternoon outdoors at Sweetheart’s Bluff, so dress for the weather and be prepared to walk in the woods.
The second workshop will cover Tree Planting and Care for Beginners and will take place on Friday May 16th from 1-3 pm at Devil Track Lake Campground. The workshop is free but pre-registration is requested. Register online at z.umn.edu/treeplanting2025
Planting trees on your land is a great idea for many reasons, but if you haven’t done it before it can be a daunting task! In this workshop we’ll cover the basics of sourcing trees, site selection, tree choices, and best practices for planting and caring for trees. If you want to plant a few trees in your yard, or hundreds in your woodland, you’ll gain tips and tricks to help you succeed.
Participants are asked to bring a pair of work gloves if you have them to use during the hands-on practice portion of this workshop. Dress for the weather, we will be outside.
