Because of the weather, this free stone-carving workshop has been rescheduled for Friday, April 4, from 10 AM - 1 PM.
The Grand Marais Public Library is thrilled to host Minnesota artist and Ojibwe educator Jeffrey Tibbetts M.Ed. Tibbetts is an enrolled member of the Fond du Lac (Nagaajiwanaang) Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, and current Program Director at the Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College. This special workshop blends ceremony, culture, and art to deliver a unique, hands-on experience. During this three-hour class, participants will carve a physical representation of their choosing from stone, while developing an understanding of the Ojibwe worldview.
Tibbetts’ cultural values are at the forefront of his workshop. He writes, “I create a space of cultural sharing and celebration into all the places I have presented at. This I do not only to share my Ojibwe culture, but also to help bring each participant’s gift of creativity to the surface.”
Prior to rescheduling, the workshop had filled up, but now some spots have opened. Interested attendees should visit the library, call us at 218-387-1140, or email Ryan at [email protected] to sign up. Space and supplies are limited to fifteen attendees.
This program is meant for ages 10 and up. Adult supervision will be required for younger attendees as sharp objects will be used to carve.
In other events, award-winning novelist Brian Malloy will be continuing his Writer in Residence series at the library with a workshop on starting a screenplay, April 2 from 6-8 PM. Both of these workshops are funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund (ACFH).
